We’ve seen many examples, also in Milano, of re-invention of commercial concepts where design plays the central role; new shops with not only original products but different activities, as courses or services, living in the shop; two ideas sharing one place; historical places with young clients. Herewith cases to understand how the organization of the layout of spaces for goods is mirror and forerunner of important society changes.

The core business of Serendeepity is music, but the landscape is made of vintage furniture and fashion by young designers. Bahama Mama is a nail bar, massage and treatments, together with spaces to listen to music, read international newspapers, watch movies and buy bio fruit and vegetables.

Wok host avantguard fashion designer and art exhibitions; Verger puts together female fashion and a restaurant.

Food is appealing for different concepts; Erba Brusca is a restaurant with a vegetable garden, kilometer zero food and bicycles for clients. Food, music and words for Pavè, a confectionery that has the ambition to look like your living room. And again coffee, clothes and exhibition live together in Pause transforming the space for each event.

Renovation also for the historical Balera dell’ Ortica, that re-opens after 15 years, with the classic trattoria and the dance floor for new young clients.

Santeria is a bigger projects that together with a more classically commercial area with records, books and clothes, offers spaces for musical showcases, conferences and co-working.

labo [metaprogetto] 2012-13 – work in progress….

Posted in diary | Leave a comment

In 2010-2011 we’ve been dealing with mercati[S]coperti, possible design solutions to update  big market structures that sometimes are not matching anymor actual way of leaving.

We’ve been working in Milano with very interesting results and in the last few month we’ve been collecting few case studies of similar intervention around the world.

Barcelona, where everybody knows the lively Boqueria, is particularly devoted to the refurbishment of old markets; in 2005 Mercat Santa Caterina was completed by the italo spanish studio EMBT. At the end of the Passeig del Born is the Mercat del Born, the city’s wholesale market until 1973; the building has been  abandoned for over 3 decades and will now be refurbished to host a  library and a cultural center, even if the works are very slow because the remains of entire streets and homes from Phillipe V’s were discovered underneath. El Ninot market, dated 1894 by architects Antoni de Falguera and Joaquim Vilaseca, is currently under construction with a project that aims to maintain the existing facility while equipping it with contemporary services. The Barceloneta Market, built in the late 19th century by architect Rovira i Trias, has been rehabilitated after several years of decay.

But also a small covered market in Donji Milanovac (Serbia), the glamorous Schrannenhalle in Munich with a  mixture of retail business and gastronomy, the Marché en fer,  seriously damaged by the earthquake in Haiti and restored to its previous fizziness, Addiction Aquatic Development in Taipei where you can have dinner in a old fish market transformed in a sophisticated sushi and Japanese grill restaurant +delicatessen shop + fast food in a marketplace atmosphere.

All these experiences testify the importance of the rethinking + refurbish of these structures, central both for historical, social and commercial opportunities.

22.04.2012 | design village

Cappellini, Cassina and Poltrona Frau inhabited the Fondazione Pomodoro during the Design Week.  A fair depandance where objects and settings stuffed the same spaces that in november we visited completly empty. The Design Village has been hosted from the 17th to the 22nd of April but it looks like it’s not going to be over.

08.03.2012 | metadesign and reality

Some students of the course have the opportunity to explain thier design to Carlotta Montebello, coordinator of Fondazione Pomodoro, to discuss with her the strategy they developed for the new interiors.

Utopia of metadesign meets the reality.

21.02.2012 | new spaces for Fondazione Pomodoro

The 21st of February has been the last day of laboratorio di Metaprogetto and  the maquettes of the Fondazione have been filled with the design of the second year students’ work.

Here a synthesis of the book explaining the design process of the new inside spaces:co-working,  markets, fashion and food stores , climbing practice walls and nursery school in the former cultural container that today is not sure about its future anymore.
