busy days|(nearly) ready to go

Starting tomorrow LA.BO.works will be very busy  being involved in many exciting new projects.

The MetaDesign Course will deal with an historical area of Milano that in the last years has been forsaken, waiting for a new project and visions that the young designers will foresee.

I Magazzini Raccordati (literally connected warehouses) will be re-designed with the tag #magazziniricordati  (literally remebrance warehouses) and the concept of the #memorystore will be the metaphor of the new relationship between the place and the users.

The first day will be on site, meeting all the players to better understand places, people and strategies. Among others IrmaSurico and Nino Strada for 4 Tunnel, Angelo Cappellina and Donatella Ronchi for F.A.S., Gianni Banfi, the historian that has deeply studied the area, Franco Beccari president of the milanese Legambiente associations, Antonio Felline the barber-photographer and two representative of local retail.

Seamless Retail Design @ Hasselt University|ready for ideas?

It’s been a two weeks intensive study meeting  at Hasselt University, organized by the Faculty of Architecture and Arts. Hosted and guided by Katelijn Quartier, Jan Vanrie and Philippe Swartenbroux the 18 selected students have been working on questioning the borders of the future of retail integrating the spatial, experiential and digital aspects into a brand new concept.

A4 group 4

Melania Vicentini (Politecnico di Milano), Ariane Flamend (UHasselt), Sofie van Rooij (TU Delft) and Emily van Vught (Emily van Vught) are persuaded that in the future we will have to become more conscious. Unik will sell customers digital designs and raw materials, in order to create your own clothing. The brand will therefor focus less on selling products, but more on creating a community in which designs can be shared. The store will become a place of interaction, where people of the community can meet, share their designs and create together.

dress box    gruppo 2_1_Page_3_Page_1

Dress Box deals with e-commerce and the lack of personal interaction in the choice process; according to Martina Panzeri (Politecnico di Milano) Katrien Schepers (UHasselt) and Rosa Steenkamp (TU Delft), “the main idea is to give trustful and personal advices”. Several boxes are spread all over a city,  connected to a platform. Retrieving the client’s profile through internet and viewing the body shape, the advisor can come up with astonishing choices to wear. These choices can be projected on the client so he/she has an idea of the garments they are likely to buy.

Lauren Broshuis (TU Delft), Mariska Hobo (UHasselt) and Sonia Pravato (Politecnico di Milano) are questioning about the senses’ role, designing a store for perfumes, bringing back the whole experience starting from the expertise and the craftsmanship; the new scent will be infused by special memory or happening of the client, creating  The Scent of Memory.

A4 Group 3_Page_1         gruppo 5_1

The design proposal of Jolien Dubois (UHasselt), Paola Pucci (Politecnico di Milano), Raf Veijfeijken (UHasselt) and  Keimpke Zigterman (TU Delft) with Fit! is concerned with the frustration coming from e-commerce in terms of not customer friendly fitting facilities. “The big problem with online shopping is that you can’t fit the clothes before buying. In our store of the future, the fitting room will be the main element of the shop”. The idea is to combine two elements, “the display wall” and the experience room. The first one is meant to be the tool to select clothes, either offline or online, and the second one is the physical place the selected item are delivered to in order to be fitted on.

Crowdshopping is fascinated by the crowdfounding concept that is translated to the retail sector. “People demand a certain category of products in a certain environment. Other people whose interests are similar back up this idea. Over this, they feel connected and they can form a community. Designers can make a design based on the wishes of the community”. Benjamin Jansen (TU Delft), Charline Steuckers (UHasselt) and Cristian Yunes (free mover) want to make the journey to the store part of the whole experience and create a relationship between the store, the environment and the range of products: leisure becomes part of the shopping, in your preferred area.

MOBILE THRESHOLDS|Summertime in Bomarzo with Middlesex University |26-27 july 2014

bomarzo info fina picl

Palazzo Orsini in Bomarzo, is the location for the one-week Summer School organized by Middlesex University with a group of twenty-five Interior Architecture / Interior Design and Dance students and graduates.

The concept of ‘Mobile Thresholds’ (‘Soglie Mobili’) generated a dialogue amongst the participants, with the spaces, with movement and with time. Interior architecture installations and site-specific choreography will be conceived and constructed in response to each other, within inter-disciplinary teams.

If you are around Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th July 2014,  it’s worth a visit!

sitting behaviour@expogate

sitting bahaviour2_small

when I try to explain what is interior design at my audience, after having detailed what clearly  is not, I end up talking about behaviour: an exploration on how people act in space. Interior is not the counterpart of exterior but a way of seeing things and to design strategies and solutions accordingly. I don’t have a clue if the designer of the expogate ever imagined that the structure would have been used as  a special private sitting niche but the result is that the new spaces are finally offering milano an unusual city experience.

Each group has a specific blog where you can explore the projects in detail.

MUBAplaystore  inside the Parco Sempione for the MUBA museum by Dario Apreda and Rocio Carranza is a mix in between a little store and a playground: with a little seed found in an ice-cream you can build a relationship in between the MUMI_store and the MUBA museum.

LIVE DESIGN by Camila Pansonato and Fernanda Motta is
MuMI_store to be placed inside at Zona Tortona for the Triennale museum. At the edge of the Designer’s area is divided in two different spaces, to drink and to buy with a connecting lobby space.

05.06.2014 | MuMi_store is on the way

MuMi_store projects, with a month to go for the final presentation, are looking pretty interesting.

The synergy between the adaptive re-use of the unused Milanese newstand and the new volume has been approached with different solutions.

Strategy and site specific/site generic issue have been faced leading to different design attitudes addressed to the specific museum target.

MUBA, the brand new Milanese children museum, will have two MUMI_store(s), one in Parco Sempione designed by Dario Apreda and Rocio Carranza Ugaz, focused on the relationship with nature and another one in Giardini Indro Montanelli, designed by Bryant Arteaga Vazquez Dick, Monica Debnath and Federica Villa  that, inspired by the Munari method, will develop the concept of explore by doing.

For the aristocratic Gallerie d’Italia, Martina Canizzo,Nicholas Gnani  and Silvia Pagani together with Alessandro Gamarino and Daniele Lo Re are drawing a common visual link that will develop in two different projects, one in Piazza Santa Francesca Romana and in Piazza Gae Alulenti to better represent the to connected but different souls of the Gallerie.

The two MuMi_store(s) della Triennale deal with the hidden plus that Triennale can offer, behind the museum’ role. For the Stazione Centrale, Silvia Liuzzo and Marcela Munoz Aguilar are thinking about the idea of shared conviviality while Camila Pansonato and Fernanda Pedreira Motta de C., in Zona Tortona, are proposing a design aperitivo where the traditional Italian drinking time meets the design.

Brera, one of the most important Italian museums, is presented in Sant’Ambrogio by Hernan Pitto Bellocchio and Wijanee Sendang as a cultural hub full of different initiatives.

LA.BO.works @ Middlesex University, London

Wearable Space, La.Bo.work’s workshop in collaboration with  Middlesex University in London, investigated how space can be wearable thanks to the design students that in 4 days had to conceptualize, design and build a special space for their talents.

You can browse the diary day by day of the workshop @wearablespace.tumblr.com and have a look here at the final video presentation.
